February 21, 2020: Update – Advisory has been lifted.
LEONARDTOWN, MD (February 19, 2020) – On February 15th to the 18th some portions of the Mount Pleasant water system lost water pressure. The loss of pressure introduced air into the water system and could have potentially introduced bacteria. Bacterial contamination can also happen due to a break in the distribution system (pipes) or a failure in the water treatment process.
What should I do? What does this mean?
- DO NOT DRINK THE WATER WITHOUT BOILING IT FIRST. Bring all water to a boil, let it boil for one minute and let it cool before using, or use bottled water. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation until further notice. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water.
- This boil water advisory will be in effect until February 21st. Results of water samples collected on February 19th should be available by this date and a second notice will only be provided if the results support continued boil water precautions.
What is being done?
An electrical problem at the water treatment plant caused a power failure to the control system. As a result, the system pressure was lost. The Maryland Environmental Service (MES) is working to correct the problem and believe the control problems have been corrected as of the date of this notice.
