Services to Support Your Patients
As public health issues (such as disease outbreaks) emerge that may impact the care of patients in this county, the St. Mary’s County Health Department will send out communications via email to healthcare providers who have provided their contact information through the local health alert system. Periodic updates via email may also be sent, notifying providers of new resources or health department programs that will assist them in caring for their patients.
Maryland law requires local health care providers, hospitals, and certain others to report diagnosed or suspected cases of specific communicable diseases to the St. Mary’s County Health Department. Reporting provides an opportunity for appropriate public health follow up for patients and contacts, helps identify potential or developing outbreaks, and provides a better understanding of Maryland’s communicable disease patterns. Providers should also place a call SMCHD at (301) 475-4176 to notify the office of their report or if they have any questions or immediate concerns. After business hours, clinicians needing to urgently report an animal bite or a reportable condition may contact the St. Mary’s County Emergency Operations Center at (301) 475-8016 to be connected to a public health official on-call.
The St. Mary’s County Health Department (SMCHD) is dedicated to partnering with our local healthcare providers and institutions to optimize the health of our county’s residents. In our efforts to work with and support our local healthcare professionals, SMCHD will be coordinating web-based provider training opportunities on relevant and emerging healthcare topics.
Our Behavioral Health Team has been reaching out to local healthcare providers to discuss medication-assisted treatment and to provide information on the training and waiver needed to practice opioid dependency treatment with buprenorphine.
The Prescription Drug Monitoring Program, or PDMP, was established to support healthcare providers and their patients in the safe and effective use of prescription drugs. The PDMP collects and securely stores information on drugs that contain controlled substances and are dispensed to patients in Maryland. The Healthy St. Mary’s Partnership (HSMP) is a community-driven coalition of partners working together to improve health in St. Mary’s County, Maryland. The coalition mobilizes members through four action teams to address the priority health issues in St. Mary’s: Behavioral Health, Chronic Disease Prevention, Environmental Health, and Violence, Injury, & Trauma.
