LEONARDTOWN, MD (October 14, 2022) – The St. Mary’s County Health Department (SMCHD) is seeking two contractors to educate local tobacco retailers in order to reduce access of tobacco and vaping products to individuals under the age of 21. The Maryland Department of Health’s Center for Tobacco Prevention and Control is funding $5,000 each to be awarded to two community or faith-based organizations.
Each contractor selected for this award must agree to:
- Educate at least 55 tobacco and vape retailers including grocery store chains and convenience stores throughout the county – split into north and south St. Mary’s County regions
- Be familiar with current tobacco state and federal laws and regulations regarding the sale of tobacco and vape products
- Provide documentation of educational visits
- Report any retailer violations or concerns to the assigned local health department coordinator
- Provide progress reports detailing retailer visits
