Gun Safety

Firearm deaths are preventable, and everyone has a role to play in prevention

Secure Your Firearms, Protect Our Community

Gun violence continues to threaten our children and our community in Maryland.

  • Gun deaths have risen 37% from 2014 to 2023
  • More than 2,200 people are injured by guns here each year
  • About 1/3 of gun-related injuries are fatal
  • Firearms are the leading cause of death among our children and teens
  • Maryland had the 11th highest gun homicide rate in the country in 2023
  • On average in 2023, 1 person was killed by firearms every  12 hours

To prevent gun violence and protect our community, we have to work together. We have to make sure we’re keeping our firearms as secure as possible. By using gun lock safety kits, we can keep our community safer.

Why We Have To Act Now

Gun violence in Maryland has reached critical levels. Gun deaths have risen 37% from 2014 to 2023. Gun homicides and gun suicides are up over the same time.

As overwhelming as these figures are, we have an opportunity to take action to prevent violence against the part of our community most vulnerable: our kids.

  • In Maryland, 64 children and teens die by guns every year
  • 17% of all gun deaths among children and teens are suicides
  • 83% of all gun deaths among children and teens are homicides

This means our kids are finding unsecured firearms and ammunition. By making sure our firearms are secured and out of the hands of our youth, we can help prevent dangerous accidents and fatal misuses.

Enhanced Firearm Security For Responsible Gun Owners

Many gun owners may use security measures like lock boxes or gun cases. In light of what’s happening in Maryland, it’s time to secure our guns even further.

While existing measures help safeguard against unauthorized access, a gun lock offers added assurance by securing firearms directly.

  • Reduce risk of accidents – By using a cable-style gun lock, firearms remain inaccessible to unauthorized individuals, lowering the risk of accidents or misuse.
  • An extra layer of protection – Create a comprehensive defense against potential threats by adding a gun lock alongside your existing security measures, like lock boxes or gun cases.
  • Affordable and accessible – Gun lock safety kits available to any and all gun owners who want them, both in Maryland and throughout the country.

Responsible gun ownership goes beyond storing firearms safely. It involves actively implementing measures to prevent accidents and unauthorized use.

It’s time we made St. Mary’s County and Maryland the safe community we deserve.

  • Works with your existing storage – Alongside responsible gun handling and proper storage practices, the gun lock provides an additional layer of security, preventing unauthorized use.
  • Clear instructions – The kit includes detailed safety instructions to ensure proper installation and usage of the gun lock, promoting responsible firearm ownership.
