Health Department Announces Events for March and April

LEONARDTOWN, MD (March 11, 2025)—The St. Mary’s County Health Department (SMCHD) announces the following events are now open for community registration.

Free Tuberculosis Screening 

In recognition of World TB Day, St. Mary’s County Health Department is offering free Tuberculosis (TB) education and testing for qualified candidates in the community. 

Risk factors for TB include:

  • People born in countries where TB disease is common, including Mexico, the Philippines, Vietnam, India, China, Haiti, and Guatemala, and other countries with high rates of TB 
  • People who misuse drugs 
  • People who live or work in nursing homes, homeless shelters, or correctional facilities 
  • People living with HIV 
  • A recent contact of a person with infectious TB disease 
  • Immunosuppressed persons 
  • People with organ transplants

When: March 25, 2025, 10:00 a.m – 3:00 p.m

CPR Training 

SMCHD offers American Red Cross adult and pediatric First Aid, CPR, and AED certification. Designed and taught by experts, the Red Cross training course satisfies OSHA-mandated job requirements, workplace or other regulatory requirements, and is also offered to community members who would like to learn these life-saving skills. This course includes student supplies and a 2-year certification.

Rising Seventh-Grader Vaccine Clinics

In partnership with St. Mary’s County Public Schools, SMCHD will be hosting vaccine clinics for rising seventh graders at each middle school. These clinics will offer vaccines required for school attendance, including TDap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis) and MCV (Meningococcal ACYW). These clinics are open only to students currently enrolled at the host schools.

Food Safety Class

SMCHD’s Environmental Health Division offers FREE introductory virtual classes on safe food handling. These classes are designed for those preparing food at home, in restaurants, or at special events where food is served to the public. This class also satisfies the food safety education requirement for SMCHD’s Gold Star Program.

Financial Education Class

PNC Bank is offering a financial education class on March 27, 2025, on how to start building credit and the best ways to save. This class is open to community members of all ages.
