The CDC is investigating multiple cases of monkeypox in several states. The St. Mary’s County Health Department (SMCHD) has enhanced surveillance and public health preparedness activities to monitor the emerging public health issue of monkeypox and to prepare for a local response.
All health care providers should be alert for patients who have rash illnesses consistent with monkeypox. Local providers should immediately report concerns/suspected monkeypox cases to the St. Mary’s County Health Department’s Infectious Disease Program by calling (301) 475-4330, or (301) 475-8016 after business hours. The health department will provide guidance on next steps, conduct an investigation of the exposure or infection, and coordinate with state and national public health entities on laboratory tests and any vaccine/treatment if necessary.
