Behavioral Health Resources

If you or a family member live with mental illness or a substance use condition, you may be struggling to find treatment, manage medications or cope with life’s challenges. There is hope – You are not alone, help is available, behavioral health conditions are treatable, and you can take practical steps to recover your life. Here you’ll find tools and resources to help you better understand your treatment options and start on the journey to recovery.

Local Services

Getting proper care for mental health and substance use issues is essential to recovery. The best treatments are the ones prescribed by a doctor or behavioral health provider. These may include counseling, medication, support groups, diet and exercise, or alternative therapies. Talk to your family doctor to see what is right for you.

Below is a list of substance use, mental health, crisis and support services in St. Mary’s County that accept Medicaid. If you have Maryland Medicaid and need assistance in learning about your behavioral health benefits contact Optum Maryland at (866) 342-6892. If you have private insurance, contact your insurance company directly for information on preferred providers and your individual plan benefits for behavioral health services.

Substance Use Treatment

Pyramid Walden

Walk-in assessments, therapy, medication-assisted treatment, recovery centers, outpatient, residential, and inpatient treatment.

Project Chesapeake

Substance Use Disorder Assessments, Intensive Outpatient and Traditional Outpatient Substance Use Treatment Program (Group and Individual Sessions),  30-90 Day Residential Substance Abuse Treatment Program, Medication-Assisted Treatment, Residential Recovery Housing (coming in Spring 2021), Individual Therapy.

Outlook Recovery

Medication assisted treatment (Methadone and Buprenorphine) and counseling services specific to opiate addiction.

Mental Health Treatment

Tri-County Youth Services Bureau 

Counseling and case management for individuals and families with children from birth to 18 years old, anger management, life skills training and youth development programs.

Center for Children

Mental health services for children and families, including: case management, co-parenting education, psychiatric rehabilitation program, group therapy, trauma focused cognitive behavioral therapy, functional family therapy, and child parent psychotherapy.

Cornerstone Montgomery – Southern Maryland

Psychiatric rehabilitation program for adults and children, targeted case management, supported employment program, in-home intervention program, adult crisis program, and community behavioral health liaison services.

Vesta, Inc.

Psychiatric assessment, therapy and counseling services, medication management, diagnosis evaluation and court ordered services.

QCI Behavioral Health

Group therapy, mobile treatment services, outpatient mental health clinic. 

Project Chesapeake

Mental Health Assessments, Mental Health Therapy for Children, Families and Adults, PRP Services for Minors (5 to 17 years old) and Adults, PRP Groups (Virtual while allowed by State).

Crisis Services

988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline

The Lifeline provides 24/7, free and confidential support for people in distress, prevention and crisis resources for you or your loved ones, and best practices for professionals in the United States. Call or text 9-8-8.

Crisis Warmline – 410-768-5522

The Warmline is a peer-run hotline that offers callers emotional support and is staffed by volunteers who are in recovery themselves. The Warmline is available 24/7 to help with non-emergency calls with assistance for mental health, substance misuse, grief counseling and referral services, and linkages to resources within the community. To access this service, community members should call 410-768-5522. The Crisis Response System Staff will speak with callers who are experiencing a mental health and/or substance use disorder emergency. Additionally, the Warmline coordinates calls with the police, fire, and community agencies that are requesting information on crisis matters.

St. Mary’s County Health Hub

Professional assessment of mental health and substance use recovery needs, crisis stabilization counseling, assistance in coordinating ongoing treatment with behavioral health professionals in the community, linkage to other needed community resources and supports, and supportive connections to peers who have lived experiences with substance use and mental health recovery.

The Southern Maryland Center for Family Advocacy

Free legal advocacy, case management, crisis management, and emergency shelter services for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in St. Mary’s County. 24/7 Crisis Hotline: (240)-925-0084

Community Support Services

Beacon of Hope Wellness & Recovery Center

Adult Recovery Center, free services to support those recovering from substance use, including support groups.

The Cove/DFZ Youth Clubhouse

Free, supportive, drug-free zone for youth ages 12-17 who either have a personal or family member with a behavioral health concern.

Southern Maryland BRIDGE Project (Building Resiliency for Infancy through Development, Growth, & Empowerment)

Care Coordination, parent education, outreach and therapy to improve outcomes for young children with behavioral health needs and their families. 

Narcotics Anonymous

Fellowship resource for those recovering from opioid drug use disorder; based upon principles of abstinence.

Alcoholics Anonymous

Fellowship resource for those recovering from alcohol use disorder; based upon principles of abstinence.

National Alliance on Mental Illness, Maryland

Advocacy, support groups and training for individuals and family members.
