St. Mary’s County Health Department Appoints New Environmental Health Director

LEONARDTOWN, MD (May 5, 2020) – The St. Mary’s County Health Department (SMCHD) announces the appointment of Heather Moritz, LEHS, as the new Director for its Environmental Health Division. Ms. Moritz previously served as Environmental Health Deputy Director at the health department, and replaces Daryl Calvano who recently retired after almost 33 years of State service.

“Ms. Moritz brings extensive environmental health experience and familiarity with our county to her new role,” stated Dr. Meena Brewster, Health Officer. “Her expertise in land development, water safety, food safety, and numerous other environmental health areas is essential for her new role. We look forward to her strong leadership in addressing environmental health matters for our county.”

“I am extremely excited and honored to have been chosen for this position,” said Ms. Moritz.  “We have an amazing team in Environmental Health that is providing outstanding services to our community.  I look forward to the years ahead, and seeing the growth in these services and how they are impacted by evolving environmental circumstances.  We have a strong team that is ready to take on the changing dynamics of environmental health.”

The SMCHD Environmental Health Division is responsible for public health concerns related to water safety (including drinking water, groundwater, recreational water, and wastewater), food safety, zoonotic infections (such as rabies and insect-borne illness), air quality, and indoor environments. The Division works closely with many key community partners in successfully addressing these core responsibilities.
