LEONARDTOWN, MD (January 8, 2015) – In recognition of Cervical Health Awareness Month in January, the St. Mary’s County Health Department is offering free HPV (human papillomavirus) vaccinations to anyone 9 – 26 years of age. Most cases of cervical cancer, a disease that affects the female reproductive system, are caused by HPV. HPV is a common virus that affects males and females and can be passed from one person to another through sexual activity. Of all cancers that affect women, cervical cancer is one of the most preventable through screening tests (Pap tests) and the HPV vaccine.
This year over 12,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed with cervical cancer. Many people may not be aware that vaccinating boys against HPV can protect them from cancer, too. Every year, over 9,000 men are affected by cancers caused by HPV.
HPV vaccine offers the greatest protection to persons who receive all three doses prior to exposure to HPV and is recommended for preteen girls and boys at age 11 or 12 years, but may be started at age 9. Vaccination is also recommended for females through age 26 years and for males through age 21 who have not been vaccinated previously.
HPV vaccine is cancer prevention! To make an appointment to receive the HPV vaccine series, please contact the health department’s Clinical Services Program at 301-475-4330.
